BABIES with HIV deteriorate faster than adults because their white blood cells multiply six times as quickly, say researchers. Steven Zeichner and his colleagues at the National Cancer Institute near Washington DC measured the rate of multiplication of white blood cells from nine infants by examining their telomeres—the protective tips of chromosomes that wear down each time a cell divides. The team found that in a year the babies’ telomeres each lost 270 bases, or units of DNA, compared with just 50 lost in cells from adults (Blood, vol 9, p 2824). As fast-dividing cells allow the virus to replicate more rapidly, the finding could explain why HIV-positive babies who are not treated develop AIDS more quickly than adults,
